In November 2021, the Austin Food + Wine Festival was in full force for all foodies as well as lovers of wine and spirits. One of my favorite things to do at the festival is strolling underneath the tents discovering new wines to learn about and enjoy.
Prescription Vineyards particularly caught my attention since I happen to proudly be a pharmacist. This is a very clever name for wine!
Of course, my first thought was how popular I would have been if I could have connected my customers with this type of prescription.
This are two prescriptions they would have been happy to have in their bags!
Although this is a catchy name for wines grown in California, there’s a lot going on behind that label as well.
About the wines
All of the previous enology experience and passion Robert Lloyd, Winemaker of Prescription Vineyards has acquired over the years has led he and his partners to craft big, rich Chardonnays and big, bold cabernets from Alexander Valley and Sonoma County. These wines reflect what the best of luscious grape-growing areas of California have to offer.
Prescription Chardonnay grapes are sourced from a smaller wine growing region of California called Clarksburg. This chardonnay is aged in 100% stainless steel and treated with oak. $30
Open the bottle and vibrant aromatics of lemon zest jump out for you to inhale. Upon the first sip, the zesty acidity makes your mouth water and your senses are filled with flavors of tropical fruits such as guava, papaya, lime zest as well as cream and butter notes that coat the palate. Think lime creme brûlée and fresh lemon zest.
PRESCRIPTION CABERNET SAUVIGNON
Alexander Valley, California $30
True to character of the bold cabernets from prestigious Alexander Valley in California, this 100% Cabernet Sauvignon fills your senses with dark, rich fruit with a cornucopia of aromas and flavors. It was barrel aged for 16 months in new and used French and American oak.
Your palate is greeted with bright, ripe dark and red fruits such as blackberry, cherry and black currants. Cabernets are considered to be the back bone of wines because of tannins and this does not disappoint. The tannins are velvety and rich with a long, smooth finish.
Certainly, these two wines can be appreciated and enjoyed by the glass but why not pair them with your favorite foods! The lively acidity of the Chardonnay and silky but sturdy tannins make both perfect wines for food pairings.
Nothing like a cheese and charcuterie board to get the afternoon started with your favorite wines. And, both will pair perfectly.
Prescription Chardonnay and creamy, Crawfish and Crab Bucatini Pasta with lots of spices and earthy mushrooms will make your guests swoon! Minerally acidity and rich fruit flavors and buttery notes make this Chardonnay a perfect match with this rich pasta dish. It will pair equally as well with grilled meats such as well-seasoned steaks, chicken and pork.
Since living in central Texas, smoking and cooking over live fire have become my passion. A bold, rich Cabernet with lots of fruit flavors will stand up to a tri-tip from my smoker with a crust of salt, pepper and garlic. This was a perfect pairing.
Check your area for these gorgeous wine! I highly recommend these two Prescriptions for your enjoyment!
