In July, both the Nashville Fire and Police Department gathered around The Slider House tables made from the old Melrose Bowling Lanes on 8th Avenue and ate as many sliders as they could and all for a very worthy cause!
I spoke with the owner Dave Wachtel and he gave me a bit of background before the festivities began. The Slider House is like a modern day Juke Joint with a mixture of old and new. It offers a fast casual dining experience with just enough gourmet to satisfy any foodie. Just look around the room and you will see authentic memorabilia all around. And, it’s one of the few restaurants that stays open past midnight to the wee hours of the morning 3AM! for all of us night owls hanging out in Nashville !
The Old Hickory Slider was my favorite! It is topped with house-made smoked BBQ sauce ,cheddar cheese, smoky Benton’s bacon and finished with leaf lettuce, tomatoes and onions. The sweet potato wedge fries are the best! Gotta try ’em!
Everyone Wins with this worthy cause!
Two teams of 6 had 15 minutes to chow down on huge plates of sliders. The Team Police were the trophy winners but everyone really wins because $2500 will be contributed to the 100 Club which is part of the Officer Down and Fallen Firefighters Foundations. This worthy foundation provides financial assistance to families of public safety officers and firefighters who are seriously injured or killed in the line-of-duty and to provide resources to enhance their safety and welfare.
Spirits were high and appetites were ready to take on the tasty challenge!
Sterling Wright, the long time employee/celebrity or as I like to refer to him The Chef with the Smile took a second to talk to me while he was cooking up the sliders for the contest. This is a man that loves his job and loves making people happy! Sterling is more than just an employee. He is family. His big personality, kindest and smile is what makes it more than just a restaurant. Nashville is lucky to have him and I have heard customers drive for hours to see him! I do know that he is a contestant on Hell’s Kitchen but that is all I know so we have to stay tuned to see what’s up with that!
GOOD LUCK STERLING!!!!
Way to go! Jamie Rice of the Nashville Police Department! I do not know how she was able to eat 8 sliders! which contributed to the Police Department winning the contest!
Nashville Firefighter Brad Sloan and his beautiful wife Denise after the contest-Brad ate 15 sliders!
Sterling Wright ~ The Chef with the Smile! ~ makes me want to come back!
