Drink like a Texan!
Cool off the Texas way with a juicy, fruity Agua Fresca made with fresh watermelon and throw a splash of Texas Hye Rum to elevate this summer refresher to another level of awesomeness.
Agua Frescas are light fruit drinks popular throughout Mexico and made by blending whole fruit with water, a bit of sugar and a little lime juice. Other ripe, flavorful and juicy fruits such as cantaloupe, honeydew melon or even mango can be made into a refreshing fruity beverage to counteract the brutal summer heat.
Local is best!
Texas has so many local, artisan handcrafted spirits it’s easy to find the spirit of your choice to make a Texas-based cocktail.
Our local rum distillery Hye Rum is my favorite way to drink rum cocktails. They make rum at their Texas distillery from Louisiana sourced sugarcane. They feature so many different flavors and styles I try to keep them all on hand for all my rum cocktail needs. The distillery is also a tasting room and bar with a tropical-tiki style and flair. We loved it so much I am now a club member so I don’t miss a thing!
This refreshing cocktail was inspired by a recent watermelon crawl this past weekend and I was craving a cool, refreshing cocktail to enjoy while relaxing in the pool. It’s made with Texas watermelon and Texas rum. Can’t get much better than that!
Grab the freshest, juiciest seedless precut watermelon chunks, half or quarter. For the sweetest and most flavorful drink make sure it’s a deep red as possible.
Because all melons differ in flavor and intensity of sweetness, sugar or simple syrup then fresh squeezed lime juice is the finishing and much needed touch of citrus acidity for the ultimate refreshing cocktail.
Clear Hye Rum was my choice this go around but would be just as delicious and refreshing with spiced, dark or coconut rums they offer.
NOTE: I really don’t follow a recipe for this because it is ultimately by taste and how much watermelon you have and how sweet it is. Here’s a base recipe to get started but adjust as needed by your personal tastes.
Just throw it all in the blender with ice, immediately pour into spicy salt rimmed glasses, garnish and enjoy!
- 6 cups Fresh chilled seedless watermelon chunks OR just fill up your blender with lots of melon
- 2 T simple syrup or more to taste
- Juice from fresh lime, start with one and add more as needed
- 2 oz per person Light Hye Rum or your favorite flavor
- Small Ice cubes
- lime wedges
- mint sprigs
- Tajine or spicy salt for rim
- Salt rims of glasses. We like Tajine.
- Add about 1 cup ice in the blender. Don’t use too much or it will dilute the cocktail
- Cram as much watermelon as you can into the blender
- Juice of one lime, add more if needed
- Start with 2 T Simple Syrup and add more if needed
- Add Rum
- Blend until smooth.
- Pour into glasses
- Garnish
- Serve
